Netflix has embraced a longstanding trend in on-air programing: the Hot Start. That’s where the credits of the show you’re currently watching get “squeezed” back (aka: “squeeze credits”) and the next show, or episode in this case, begins to play.
It’s on-air goal is to retain audiences from one show into the next show, thereby spiking the ratings numbers for the incoming show. Netflix is using it to create a seamless flow across a show by going from the end of one episode directly into the opening of the next episode. It’s a very effective technique that networks have been using for years. So much so, that even here at PBS, we’ve been trying to find ways of implementing the technique.
Although, the design and implementation seem clumsy by my design standards, this should be a hit with subscribers.
